EMERGED 1980 · WHAT IT GREW OUT OF POST-DISCO, FUNK, SOUL · 5 TRACKS TO START WITH, 2 SOURCES

Boogie is mid-tempo, funk-rooted dance music of the early 1980s, mostly 110 to 116 bpm, with slap or synth bass, loud claps and keyboards in place of disco's four-on-the-floor. The name was reportedly coined by British DJs Norman Jay and Dez Parkes for Black American dance records of the period. D Train's "You're the One For Me" (1981), on Prelude, is described as foundational for the genre, with its beat sitting mostly on beats one and two. Kashif is counted among its pioneers.
