PRIVACY

WHO WE ARE

What the Genre!? is made in Berlin. For anything about your data, write to privacy@whatthegenre.com.

WHAT WE KEEP

Members: your email address, so we can send you sign-in links, and the handle you pick.

What you do here: votes, the reasons you give, comments, genres you add, links you add, the tracks you look up while signed in, and your answers to our short survey if you give them. Votes, reasons, comments and additions are public under your handle.

Voting without an account gives your browser a random id, so your votes stay yours. We do not know who you are.

For limits that keep the site working for everyone, we count new tracks and searches per visitor for an hour, under a scrambled form of the IP address that cannot be turned back into it. These counts are deleted after two hours. Our host keeps short-lived request logs.

We count visits to see how many people come and from where: the page, the site that sent you, your country, browser and device type. Our host counts them without cookies and without storing who you are; the scrambled visitor id it uses changes every day. Search terms and anything else after the ? in an address are left out.

COOKIES

Only the sign-in session, set when you sign in or vote. Visits are counted without cookies. No advertising, no tracking across sites. That is why there is no cookie banner.

WHO ELSE SEES IT

Supabase stores the database and handles sign-in. Vercel hosts the site and counts visits. Resend sends our emails. None of them may use your data for anything else.

Album covers from Discogs load from Discogs directly, so Discogs sees your IP address when a page shows one. Everything else, including searches, goes through our servers.

We do not sell data or share it with anyone else.

WHY

Your account and what you add: to run the service you signed up for. The limits and logs: our legitimate interest in keeping the site up and free of abuse. Counting visits: our legitimate interest in knowing how the site is used.

YOUR RIGHTS

You may ask for a copy of your data, have it corrected or deleted, or object to how we use it: write to privacy@whatthegenre.com. You may also complain to a data protection authority; ours is the Berlin Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information.

We keep your data until you delete your account or ask us to.
