Punk and post-punk played against disco and funk rhythms, with dance beats under scratchy guitars. It took shape in the late 1970s in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Leeds, with ESG, Liquid Liquid, James Chance and the Contortions, Bush Tetras and the Slits among its early acts. A revival around 2000 grew out of Brooklyn with LCD Soundsystem, the Rapture and Liars, and in Britain fed the NME's new rave tag.
