EMERGED 1982 · WHAT IT GREW OUT OF GOTHIC ROCK, DARK WAVE, POST-PUNK, NEW WAVE · 5 TRACKS TO START WITH, 4 SOURCES

A slow, reverb-heavy offshoot of gothic rock where voices and chiming guitars count for more than riffs. It came from the UK in the early 1980s, mostly through 4AD bands: Cocteau Twins, This Mortal Coil and early Dead Can Dance. German zines named it ethereal wave and US magazines said ethereal goth; in the 1990s Projekt Records carried it on with Black Tape for a Blue Girl, Love Spirals Downwards and Lycia.
