EMERGED 1997 · WHAT IT GREW OUT OF GHETTO HOUSE · 3 TRACKS TO START WITH, 3 SOURCES

Juke is the fast, hard-edged Chicago dance music that grew out of 1990s ghetto house, played at gyms, park district dances and picnics on the South and West Sides. DJ Puncho and Gant-Man pushed the word, using it on their 1997 track "Juke It" and on mixtapes, and by 2002 it had stuck. Dance Mania, the label behind early ghetto house by DJ Funk, DJ Milton and DJ Slugo, closed in 2000. A Gantman remix of Beyonce's "Check On It" was reportedly the first juke track released by a major label, Columbia.
