NOW

EMERGED 1987 · WHAT IT GREW OUT OF EBM, ACID HOUSE, HI-NRG, NEW WAVE · 4 TRACKS TO START WITH, 2 SOURCES

New beat was a Belgian club sound of the late 1980s made from EBM, industrial and early acid records played slowed down. DJs ran 45 rpm singles at about 33 with the pitch pushed up, which gave a heavy, dark and often dubby groove. Clubs such as Boccaccio near Ghent and the Ancienne Belgique in Antwerp drove it, and A Split Second's "Flesh" is the record usually named first. Commercial success flooded the market, and by about 1990 many clubs had switched to house.
