EMERGED 1978 · WHAT IT GREW OUT OF ELECTRONIC MUSIC, MINIMAL MUSIC, MUSIQUE CONCRÈTE, DRONE · 5 TRACKS TO START WITH, 2 SOURCES
Brian Eno gave the music its name in the liner notes to Ambient 1: Music for Airports, which asks that it be as ignorable as it is interesting. He set it against the canned music of firms like Muzak, saying it should leave calm and room to think. The history usually points back to Satie's furniture music, musique concrète and minimalist drone.
