EMERGED 1979 · WHAT IT GREW OUT OF PUNK ROCK, DARK WAVE, ELECTRONIC MUSIC · 4 TRACKS TO START WITH, 5 SOURCES

A cold, synth-led strain of post-punk from France and Belgium, with less guitar, analogue experiments, military drums and a gloomy groove. Crack calls Lyon its birthplace and Marquis de Sade its defining band, whose Dantzig Twist came out in 1979. KaS Product, Martin Dupont and Asylum Party carried it through the 1980s, much of it on small labels and cassettes, and reissue compilations revived it in the 2000s.
