EMERGED 1980 · WHAT IT GREW OUT OF DISCO, POST-DISCO, SYNTH-POP · 5 TRACKS TO START WITH, 2 SOURCES
Dance-pop is pop made for both the club and the radio: uptempo, strong beats, plain song structures and catchy hooks. It is usually producer-led, with writers and producers making the record and then hiring a singer. In the 1980s Stock Aitken Waterman made a hi-NRG-flavoured version for Kylie Minogue, Dead or Alive and Bananarama, and in the 1990s house crept in through hits such as Madonna's "Vogue". Indeep's "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life" (1982) is named as one of the first dance-pop songs.
