DRONE MUSIC
La Monte Young formed the Theatre of Eternal Music in New York in 1962 to play long sustained tones, improvised inside strict rules he set.[2] Young later called the style the sustained tone branch of minimalism.[1] Most of the group's 1960s recordings stayed unreleased, but John Cale, a member, carried the idea into rock with his viola drone on The Stooges' "We Will Fall" in 1969.[1][2]
