La Monte Young formed the Theatre of Eternal Music in New York in 1962 to play long sustained tones, improvised inside strict rules he set. Young later called the style the sustained tone branch of minimalism. Most of the group's 1960s recordings stayed unreleased, but John Cale, a member, carried the idea into rock with his viola drone on The Stooges' "We Will Fall" in 1969.
