EMERGED 1968 · WHAT IT GREW OUT OF REGGAE, ROCKSTEADY, SKA · 3 TRACKS TO START WITH, 2 SOURCES
Jamaican engineers began stripping the vocals from reggae records in the late 1960s and selling the instrumental versions as B-sides. King Tubby, working from his own studio in Kingston, played the mixing desk like an instrument, dropping parts in and out under echo and reverb. Blackboard Jungle Dub (1973), made by Lee Perry with Tubby, is counted among the first dub albums.
