Mortiis, the project of former Emperor bassist Håvard Ellefsen, made instrumental music on synthesizers alone in the early 1990s and called it dark dungeon music. Burzum, Varg Vikernes's black metal project, put its own keyboard piece at the end of the 1994 album Hvis lyset tar oss. Both came out of the early Norwegian black metal scene, and Mortiis says the first records went straight to tape, with no MIDI or sequencers.
