EMERGED 1948 · 5 TRACKS TO START WITH, 4 SOURCES
Composers in Paris, Cologne and New York built pieces from the late 1940s out of tape recordings and electronically generated tones. The Paris group under Schaeffer worked from recorded sound, while the WDR studio in Cologne used only sine waves, and the two methods joined in Stockhausen's Gesang der Jünglinge (1955-56). The Columbia-Princeton centre in New York worked on tape, electronic and computer music, and later composers added synthesizers and splicing, speed changes and loops.
