footwork

NOW

EMERGED 1997 · WHAT IT GREW OUT OF GHETTO HOUSE, JUKE · 4 TRACKS TO START WITH, 2 SOURCES

Footwork is Chicago dance music built for battling dancers, at around 160 bpm with chopped vocal samples, clattering toms, triplets and staccato snares. It grew out of ghetto house and juke, and RP Boo's "Baby Come On" (1997) is widely treated as the founding record. Tracks were made to provoke dance battles, with sudden bass drops to throw off opponents. Planet Mu's Bangs & Works compilation (2010) and DJ Rashad's Double Cup (Hyperdub, 2013) carried it abroad.
