EMERGED 1994 · WHAT IT GREW OUT OF TECHNO, AMBIENT, NOISE, EXPERIMENTAL · 3 TRACKS TO START WITH, 4 SOURCES
Glitch builds music from the sounds of malfunctioning recording equipment and digital electronics, treating errors as material. It took shape as a distinct movement in 1990s Germany and Japan, around Achim Szepanski's Mille Plateaux label and Ryoji Ikeda. Early records used damaged CDs, and later work moved to software that simulates the faults, with clicks and scratches often standing in for percussion. Oval's 94 Diskont (1995) is treated as a key reference record for the mid-1990s style.
