EMERGED 1990 · WHAT IT GREW OUT OF TRANCE, PSYCHEDELIC ROCK, ACID HOUSE, NEW BEAT, EBM · 2 TRACKS TO START WITH, 6 SOURCES
Goa trance took shape in the early 1990s out of the party scene in Goa, India, running roughly 130 to 150 BPM with drone-like basslines and a thick kick. Producers favoured squelchy filtered synth lines and film-sample vocals about psychedelia and spirituality. Paul Oakenfold took it to a wider audience in 1994 with his BBC Essential Mix, known as the Goa Mix. The Psytrance Guide lists Oriental, Indian-sounding melodies as typical and calls it the ancestor of psytrance.
