EMERGED 1979 · WHAT IT GREW OUT OF POST-PUNK, GLAM ROCK · 5 TRACKS TO START WITH, 4 SOURCES
Post-punk turned dark and theatrical, with deep vocals, tribal drums and echoing guitar. It came out of England in the late 1970s: Bauhaus's Bela Lugosi's Dead (1979) is usually taken as the starting point, and In the Flat Field (1980) as the first goth album. The Cure's Seventeen Seconds, Faith and Pornography set it further, and UK Decay's Steve Abbott is believed to have first called the music goth.
