EMERGED 1977 · WHAT IT GREW OUT OF DISCO, ELECTRONIC MUSIC · 5 TRACKS TO START WITH, 2 SOURCES
Hi-NRG took its template from Donna Summer's "I Feel Love" (1977): a four-on-the-floor kick with an offbeat hi-hat. The name came from Summer's own "high energy" description, and the music grew in the American gay club scene. Patrick Cowley's "Menergy" and "Megatron Man" became club anthems in 1981, and by the mid-1980s Stock Aitken Waterman had given it a commercial UK sound. Tempos sit around 120 to 140 bpm over octave basslines.
