Illbient came out of New York in the early 1990s, when hip hop-minded experimental musicians crossed ambient with dub, jungle and post-industrial sound. DJ Olive and DJ Spooky each claim to have coined the name, which joins the slang 'ill' to ambient. Early names include We, Byzar and Spectre, and artists released on Spooky's WordSound label; Laurent Fintoni's oral history of the scene is titled Detuning the City.
