ILLBIENT
Illbient came out of New York in the early 1990s, when hip hop-minded experimental musicians crossed ambient with dub, jungle and post-industrial sound.[1] DJ Olive and DJ Spooky each claim to have coined the name, which joins the slang 'ill' to ambient.[1] Early names include We, Byzar and Spectre, and artists released on Spooky's WordSound label; Laurent Fintoni's oral history of the scene is titled Detuning the City.[1]
