Kevin Martin coined the term in a musical sense, and it first appeared in print in The Wire in September 1993. He described the music as fragmented and subdued, music that "pushed away" listeners. His 1994 double CD Ambient 4: Isolationism, on Virgin, collected new tracks by Jim O'Rourke, Thomas Köner, Zoviet France, Lull and Final, among others.
