EMERGED 2001 · WHAT IT GREW OUT OF AMBIENT, MINIMAL MUSIC · 1 TRACKS TO START WITH, 3 SOURCES
Steve Roden used the word lowercase for his own quiet work from the mid-1980s, and told The Wire's Rob Young so in 1997. By 2001 it was the working label on an online list called lowercase-sound, where artists kept arguing over its rules. Roden's Forms of Paper, a 54-minute piece of handled paper made for a Los Angeles library branch, became the exemplary record, and lowercase-sound2002 followed with Taylor Deupree, Stephan Mathieu and Toshimaru Nakamura.
