EMERGED 1977 · WHAT IT GREW OUT OF PUNK ROCK, FREE JAZZ, AVANT-GARDE, NOISE, FUNK · 5 TRACKS TO START WITH, 4 SOURCES

Abrasive, atonal music from New York's Lower East Side, with screamed or spoken vocals and little use for rock chords, melody or song structure. The scene formed around 1977, drew on free jazz, minimalism and performance art, and was largely over by summer 1980. Brian Eno's 1978 compilation No New York on Antilles collected four of its bands: the Contortions, Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, Mars and DNA.
