EMERGED 1979 · WHAT IT GREW OUT OF PUNK ROCK, EXPERIMENTAL ROCK, NOISE MUSIC, NO WAVE, POST-PUNK, HARDCORE PUNK · 4 TRACKS TO START WITH, 5 SOURCES

Rock pushed into noise through heavy distortion and feedback, sometimes with drum machines or tape work, close to hardcore punk without belonging to it. The Velvet Underground's White Light/White Heat (1968) is treated as its first record, and New York's no wave fed it at the end of the 1970s. By 1986 Big Black, Sonic Youth, Swans and Butthole Surfers had each put out records that set its terms.
