NOISE ROCK
Rock pushed into noise through heavy distortion and feedback, sometimes with drum machines or tape work, close to hardcore punk without belonging to it.[1][2] The Velvet Underground's White Light/White Heat (1968) is treated as its first record, and New York's no wave fed it at the end of the 1970s.[2][3] By 1986 Big Black, Sonic Youth, Swans and Butthole Surfers had each put out records that set its terms.[1]
