Sound art uses sound as its main material and is usually shown in galleries, museums and site-specific installations rather than in concert halls. Precursors include Luigi Russolo's Intonarumori (1913); the phrase appeared on the cover of Something Else Press's 1974 yearbook, and MoMA mounted an exhibition titled Sound Art in 1979, curated by Barbara London. Works use loops, sensors, multichannel speakers or physical sculpture, as in Janet Cardiff's Forty Part Motet (2001), shown at ARoS in Aarhus.
