EMERGED 1991 · WHAT IT GREW OUT OF HIP HOP, DUB, SOUL, FUNK · 5 TRACKS TO START WITH, 2 SOURCES
Slow, heavy breakbeats under soul vocals and dub bass, made around Bristol from the early 1990s. Massive Attack's Blue Lines (1991) set the template, with Portishead following. Mixmag's Andy Pemberton coined the name in June 1994, first for DJ Shadow's "In/Flux" on Mo' Wax, a London label that sat alongside Ninja Tune in the scene.
