DRILL AND BASS
Drill and bass is where IDM met jungle: in the mid-1990s Luke Vibert, Aphex Twin and Squarepusher took jungle's breakbeats and cut them into fast, crowded, often playful patterns.[1] Vibert's Plug records, Aphex Twin's Hangable Auto Bulb EPs and Squarepusher's early releases date from 1995, and Aphex Twin's Come to Daddy, built on drum and bass beats, reached the UK top 40 in 1997.[1][2] It had faded by 1999, and breakcore took up its more frantic side.[1]
