BROKEN BEAT
A West London dance style from the late 1990s, broken beat avoids a straight four-on-the-floor pulse for syncopated, choppy rhythms, often with female vocals and a jazz-funk streak.[1] The scene centred on Ladbroke Grove, where Goya Music had its offices, and Bugz in the Attic and IG Culture are credited with kick-starting it.[1] 4hero's album Two Pages was influential, and nights such as Co-op and Inspiration Information carried the scene.[1]
