WHAT HAPPENED TO EVERY NOISE AT ONCE

Every Noise at Once mapped thousands of genres from Spotify listening data: 6,291 of them when it stopped. Its creator, Glenn McDonald, was laid off by Spotify in December 2023 and lost access to the data behind it, so the site no longer receives new music.[1][2]

The pages still load, but the genres stopped growing at the end of 2023, and newer artists are not on it.[1]

RATE YOUR MUSIC

A member-voted genre hierarchy, detailed and debated, with charts you can filter by genre and year.[3] Best for albums and for exploring a genre through its highest-rated records.

DISCOGS

A short list of broad genres and more specific styles, filed on each release.[4] Best for record collectors and for finding which labels and pressings a style ran through.

MUSICBRAINZ

An open music database where genres can be tagged on artists, releases and single tracks.[5] Best if you tag your own library and want open data.

ISHKUR'S GUIDE TO ELECTRONIC MUSIC

A long-running, opinionated guide to electronic genres, with example tracks for each. Its dates are a starting point for the genre map here.

WHAT THE GENRE!?

The closest thing to Every Noise for one track at a time. Search a song and get its subgenre, which anyone can vote on without an account: Bottle by Remi Wolf, for example.

The genre map is the part Every Noise fans may like most: every subgenre as a station on a metro line, from the first record to the latest, dated, cited and with records to start with. Techno, house and breakbeat are open, and more lines are coming.
