What the Genre!? vs Last.fm tags: a subgenre, not a tag cloud

17 October 2026

THE SHORT ANSWER

Last.fm tags tell you how people describe a track, in their own words. What the Genre!? tells you its subgenre, and where that subgenre sits among the others.

HOW LAST.FM TAGS WORK

Listeners can put free-form text tags on songs, albums and artists.[1] Each tag gets a weight from 0 to 100 by how often it is used, and the top tags of a track are available to other apps.[2]

Because the words are free, not every tag is a genre. Tools that read Last.fm for genres filter out tags such as "seen live" or "my favorite music" with a list of known genre names.[2]

WHERE TAGS FALL SHORT FOR A GENRE

A tag cloud is not an answer. "electronic", "chill", "house" and "favourites" on the same track leave you to guess which one is the genre.

There is no place for the argument. A tag counts how many people used a word, not why.

WHAT WHAT THE GENRE!? DOES INSTEAD

Every track has a genre path, then subgenre rows people vote on: In the Air Tonight by Phil Collins, for one.

The names come from one tree, so "deep house" means the same thing on every track, and the genre map shows its history.

A vote can carry a one-line reason, kept in the discussion under the track.
