THE SHORT ANSWER
Use Rate Your Music to rate and chart albums and to read what a large community thinks of a record. Use What the Genre!? when you have one song and want to know its subgenre, or want to say it is wrong.
Both are free to read. Both let people vote on genres. They answer different questions.
WHAT RATE YOUR MUSIC DOES WELL
Rate Your Music is one of the largest music rating communities on the web. Members rate and review releases, and the site builds charts from those ratings, filterable by genre, year and more.[1]
Its genres are voted by members, with primary and secondary genres for each release, and an active community debates new genres before they are added.[2] Its genre hierarchy is detailed enough that other tools reuse it.[3]
Since 2024 it has song charts, song lists and song recommendations, built from track ratings.[1]
WHERE WHAT THE GENRE!? IS DIFFERENT
One page per track. Where Is My Mind by Pixies has its own genre, separate from the album it is on. An album with a house track, an ambient track and a breakbeat track gets three answers, not one.
The subgenre is the argument. Each track shows a genre path, then subgenre rows that people vote on. A vote can carry a one-line reason, and the reasons sit in the discussion under the track, so you see why people think it is deep house and not tech house.
No account to vote. You can vote the moment you land on a track. Signing up, with an email link, is only needed to comment and to add new genres.
A map of where each subgenre comes from. The genre map draws every subgenre as a metro station on its line, dated, with a cited history and records to start with: house, techno and breakbeat are open.
