What the Genre!? vs Every Noise at Once: a frozen map and a living one

17 October 2026

THE SHORT ANSWER

Every Noise at Once showed how genres sound next to each other, from Spotify's data. It stopped growing in December 2023. What the Genre!? keeps growing, one voted track at a time.

WHAT EVERY NOISE AT ONCE WAS

A map of 6,291 genres placed by how they sound, built by Glenn McDonald at Spotify. He was laid off in December 2023, lost access to the data, and the site no longer receives new music.[1][2]

HOW THE TWO MAPS DIFFER

Every Noise placed genres by sound. The genre map here places them in time: each subgenre is a station on its line, from the first record to the latest, dated and cited.

Every Noise took its genres from Spotify's artists. Here each track has its own subgenre, voted by listeners: Bottle by Remi Wolf, for one.

Every Noise is frozen. Here, every vote and every new line keeps the map current: techno, house and breakbeat are open.
