What the Genre!? vs MusicBrainz genres: a database for taggers, a page for listeners
17 October 2026
THE SHORT ANSWER
MusicBrainz is open music data, made for tagging libraries and building apps. What the Genre!? is made for one person asking what one track is.
HOW MUSICBRAINZ GENRES WORK
Genres are part of MusicBrainz's tag system: a curated list of tags is shown as genres, and the list grows by request.[1][2]
They can sit on artists, releases and tracks, and anyone with an account can vote a genre up or down or add a new one.[2][3] Apps read them through the API, sorted by votes.[4]
WHERE WHAT THE GENRE!? IS DIFFERENT
A page, not a record. Each track has its genre path and subgenre rows on a page you can find from a search: Where Is My Mind by Pixies.
No account to vote, and a one-line reason with it.
Subgenres come with history: the genre map dates and cites each one.
WHICH ONE TO USE
